USAA Fort Innovate Activation
Exploring military innovations from the past 100 years and sparking creative imaginations.
To celebrate their 100th year of providing insurance to the military community, USAA hosted a traveling interactive exhibit called Fort Innovate, which featured 100 years of military innovations.
With children between the ages of six and ten in mind, 160over90 created five interactive games to highlight five military inventions, built out a historical timeline featuring an additional 31 inventions, and developed a website to hold information about the traveling activation.

Timeline
I designed an interactive timeline of military innovations, featured on the website and a touch table within the traveling exhibit, to give historical context to 36 military inventions and how they continue to be used today. I sourced specific imagery for each invention and designed the timeline UI to account for differing amounts of text and image sizes while highlighting inventions used in other exhibits with themed iconography. Using webbed linework to move the users forward (or backward) in time, I established a chronological order and made sure that the inventions could be quickly viewed using carousel animations within the modal state.
We built an outer space game controlled with a real VR headset so users could understand the power of virtual reality. Pulling inspiration from traditional gaming heads-up-displays, I established a unique UI design that is easy to understand and keeps users immersed in the experience.
We created a search and rescue simulation game to showcase the invention of the drone. I worked hand-in-hand with our development team to finesse the UI so that users could navigate the radar map and fly throughout the simulated world.
